DEREK STANK

VARSITY HEAD OFFENSIVE LINE COACH
+ Offensive Run Coordinator and Strength Coach

Coach Derek Stank was named the Head Football Coach of the San Marcos Knights in the spring of 2019.  He will be the head offensive line coach for the Knights and will also be teaching Physical Education at San Marcos High School. He came to San Marcos after spending 12 years at Bedford High School in Bedford, NH.  Over that time, Coach Stank was a PE teacher, football coach, and track coach from 2007-2019. He was the assistant football and head track coach from 2007-2014 and head football coach of the Bedford Bulldogs from 2015-2018.  He led the Bulldogs to 2 undefeated Division 1 State Championships in 4 years and had a 4-year record of 39-6. Coach Stank has a passion for helping young adults develop into better people on and off the field. He has also helped dozens of players play at the next level. Coach Stank was the 2006 recipient of the UNH Jim Urquhart Male Student-Athlete of the Year award for being a dual sport athlete and for his accomplishments in the department of kinesiology. He was the captain and MVP for the University of New Hampshire football program in 2005. Coach Stank is married to Sarah, a north county native, and recently welcomed a new baby boy Decker Reh.  He is excited to part of the San Marcos Football family for many years to come. 

ERIC JORGENSEN

Role: VARSITY Co. DC
Position: DL

Coach Jorgensen has been coaching at San Marcos since 2012.  This season he will be coaching the defensive linemen. Coach Jorgensen’s playing experience is at Southern Illinois University from 1982-1986.  During that time the Salukis were 1983 I-AA National Champions. Coach Jorgensen resides in Vista with his wife Laura, his son Zachary and daughter Alexandria.

JOEL BANUELOS

Position: LB

Coach Banuelos begins his 5th year working with our Knight Football program where he will serve as Varsity Defensive Coordinator and coach our Varsity Linebackers.  Coach Banuelos is proud to be a branch in the legendary John Carroll’s coaching tree, where he worked for 15 years. In his coaching career he has coached Offensive and Defensive lines, Linebackers, Running Backs and Receivers.  Coach Banuelos strongly believes in Loyalty, Hard Work, Dedication and a motto that was taught to him by his mentor, Coach Campbell, “ QUITTING IS NOT AN OPTION “ Coach Banuelos resides in Vista with his daughter Melissa.

MICHAEL TODISCO

Role: VARSITY STC
Position: Asst. LB

Coach Todisco will be coaching his 11th year of high school football, but his first year in the Knight football program. He will be the Varsity Special Teams Coordinator and assist with coaching the Linebackers. He started his coaching journey in the state of New Jersey, and also coached in Orange County, ranging from Special Teams Coordinator to Defensive Position Coach and Coordinator. He is also a teacher in the district, as the Physical Education teacher at Knob Hill Elementary. Coach Todisco resides in San Marcos with his amazing and supportive wife Kira, and their two boys, Arik 7, and Andrew, 4. 

RYAN TAYLOR

Role: VARSITY OC
Position: QB Coach

Coach Taylor has been coaching at San Marcos High School since 2016. He graduated from Aquinas High School in San Bernardino after lettering for three years in football, and two years in baseball and basketball. He was a finalist for the Ken Hubbs award, which recognizes the top high school athletes in San Bernardino County. He is now attending California State University San Marcos while coaching football and baseball at San Marcos High School. This season he will be the Varsity Offensive Coordinator. 

TJ SUMPTER

Role: VARSITY Asst.
Position: DB

Coach Sumpter graduated from Fallbrook High School in 2008. Was a three sport athlete (football,basketball,track).Sumpter received a football scholarship and played his collegiate career for Western New Mexico University. Sumpter began his coaching career at WNMU from 2014-2016. Sumpter moved back to California to coach at Fallbrook High School for the 2016-2018 seasons. He was the Varsity Slot receivers coach and Head Freshman Coach. This will be his first season at San Marcos High School working with the Varsity Defensive Backs.

DAVID DIAZ

David Diaz - I am Coach Diaz the JV Offensive Coordinator / Varsity running back coach here at San Marcos High School. It is my 1st year here with the program and I am very excited for the bright future of this community. 

CHRIS HALL

Role: JV Asst.
Position: DB

Chris Hall...I am the JV Defensive Back Coach and Assistant Varsity Defensive Back Coach. I played at Grambling State University, Joined the Marine Corps and retired after serving 21 years. I have also coached Pop Warner and AYF in the San Marcos area. I spent two years at Westview High School coaching the Freshman DB's and JV DB's. This is my first year at San Marcos High. 

FRANK FINNERTY

Coach Frank is entering his 6th season at San Marcos High School where he looks to play his role in helping the program win both the Avocado League and the CIF SDS Open Division titles. He’d like to thank all the players, managers, and trainers for making our program one of the best in San Diego County.

JEREMY BITTKE

Role: JV Asst.
Position: OL

Jeremy Bittke - Will be his first year at SMHS after spending one season at Escondido Charter High School. He will be assisting with the offensive line for the JV. Was a graduate and former player at Mission Hills High School class of 2014.

AL GORDON

Position: WR

Coach Gordon is an innovator of next level performance training.  Mentor to those who aspire to be great beyond the playing field. Redefining the term coach by seizing every opportunity to help others supersede their expectations and dreams.  Lifter of character and weights. Surpassed the 10,000 hours of coaching experience years ago and has over 10,000 hours of post high school playing experience. I’m focused on helping to build a legacy of greatness now.  From North Carolina, yet California is where I call home.

MICHAEL HOUGHTON

Coach Houghton --- I am excited to be a new JV Assistant STC and LB Coach serving with this dynamic staff in such a progressive program involving these top youth athletes. I was a linebacker at UC Davis in the 80's then coached there 4 years. I recently coached SMPW 3, SMGS 9, SMYB 6, & SM AYSO 3 seasons. I was a contractor here for 27 years, I have been serving as a youth pastor since 2002, at a rescue mission since 2012, and I have 2 children which are Knight students.

DAMON GRAY

Position: LB

Coach Damon is a SMHS alumni and played outside linebacker for the Knights himself. His love and passion for football brought him to begin his coaching career in 2003 for San Marcos Pop Warner. He coached for SMPW for 10 seasons until his own son started attending San Marcos High School. At that time Damon joined the San Marcos High School Coaching staff and has never looked back. Damon is a North County native and is married to his high school sweetheart, Tricia (also a SMHS alum)  and both of their children graduated from San Marcos High.

Coach Nuckols graduated from San Marcos High School in 01 I played (football, Basketball, track) an I been Coaching at SMHS since 2014-present.

RUBEN AMPARANO

Coach Amparano is returning to SMHS after a 2 year break where he was training his younger son. Has been the freshman O-Line at SM from 2014-2016 and has coached PW/AYF for 6 yrs prior to that. Has 2 daughters attending SM and a part of the SM dance team.  My goal as a coach every year is to make sure that the OLine is prepared to protect themselves and their teammates and are ready for the next level. 

MIKE HARRIS

Position: RB

Coach Harris has been coaching at SMHS since 2015.  As a coach, Mike challenges and mentors our student athletes to pursue excellence in their personal lives, in school, and on the gridiron.  Coach Harris insists SMHS football player master themselves physically and mentally for the rigors of football by mastering the basic skills, through exhaustive repetition.  Coach Harris came to us after serving the citizens for 27 years of as a local law enforcement officer. Mike’s passion is to build life giving relationships, with teenage boys, to help them transition into morale, courageous, and noble men.  Mike and his wife Laina have been married for 22 years, they have three sons Morgan, Jadon and Aaron, all have played, or are playing HS or College football.

Coach Gathings — I’m grateful for the opportunity to return San Marcos High School as a Freshman football coach. I coached at the school from 2014-2017 as the freshmen defensive line coach. While simultaneously serving at the school as the School Resource Officer.
